Шестигранник — это  прокат в виде шестиугольника, имеющий шесть равных граней. Размер шестигранника определяют по диаметру вписанной в него окружности. Шестигранники стальной нарезают толщиной от 4 мм до 100мм, длиной от 2 до 6,5 м из качественной углеродистой, автоматной, низколегированной, илегированной стали или от 1,5 до 6,5 м из высоколегированной стали. Материал шестигранника – сталь, легированная либо высокоуглеродистая, получают ее горячим либо холодным прокатом. Горячекатаный шестигранник производят  в основном по ГОСТ 2879-88, калиброванный шестигранник производят  в основном по ГОСТ 8560-78. Материал, из которого изготовлен прокат, – это один из самых важных факторов, который определяет потенциальные сферы его применения. Одни марки стали рассчитаны на работу в обычных условиях, другие – на использование в конструкциях, к которым предъявляются повышенные требования.При изготовлении шестигранника используются следующие стали:

• углеродистые обычного и высокого качества;
• конструкционные повышенной обрабатываемости;
• высокопрочные легированные и низколегированные;
• коррозионно-устойчивые (нержавеющие);
